Dental Implants
Do I need an implant if a tooth is missing or very loose?
If a tooth has to be extracted or is already missing, an implant can restore your chewing and a natural look. Weak jawbone or untreated gum disease raises the risk of failure, so it is safest to get a periodontist's diagnosis and gum treatment first, then decide whether and how to place an implant.
When you may need it
- A tooth is missing or too damaged to save
- You want to replace uncomfortable dentures or bridges
- Several missing teeth make chewing difficult
- A tooth loosened by gum disease is scheduled for extraction
Diagnosis
A 3D CT scan at your visit shows the thickness and density of your jawbone and the position of nerves. Using this data, we simulate the implant's position, angle and depth before surgery, and decide whether gum treatment is needed first. If you have a condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, we review your medications and general health in advance.
Treatment
At the first visit we run detailed exams and plan the surgery, adding bone grafting or a sinus lift if needed. After the implant is placed and has fused with the bone, the crown is attached. One periodontist is responsible for the entire process from start to finish.
Recovery
It usually takes 2–4 months for the implant to fully fuse with the bone, and up to 6 months when bone grafting is involved. You may have some swelling or mild pain for a few days after surgery, but it rarely interferes with daily life.
