A healthy start for your child's teeth
Children's Dentistry
How can I prevent cavities in my child's teeth?
Cavities spread faster in baby teeth than in adult teeth, so regular check-ups and preventive care are important. Sealants that fill the grooves of back teeth and fluoride treatments reduce cavities, and treating any cavity early with resin or a crown limits its effect on developing teeth and jaws.
When you may need it
- Your child needs a first check-up after baby teeth come in
- You want to protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth
- Your child often eats sweets and is at higher risk of cavities
- A baby tooth hurts or has turned dark
Diagnosis
An oral exam, with X-rays if needed, shows how far any cavity has progressed and how adult teeth are coming in. We explain everything at your child's level so they feel comfortable before treatment begins.
Treatment
For prevention we apply sealants and fluoride. Cavities are treated with resin fillings or stainless steel crowns depending on their size, and we teach good brushing habits at every visit.
Recovery
Sealants, fluoride and resin fillings are usually done in a single visit with no restrictions afterwards. After a crown, your child can eat right away without pain.
